This impressive chateau has a checkered history, over the centuries falling foul to flooding, fire, ransacking and ruin resulting in the building being reconstructed several times. The first record of its existence dates back as early as 928. Once inside the ramparts a wide stone hallway leads past an inner cloistered courtyard revealing part of the ancient ruined abbey walls. Despite the high ceilings and grand interior, there's an informal atmosphere thanks to current custodians, British couple Peter & Katie who have been running it as a hotel for thirteen years. From the pretty terrace with canopied tables, where breakfast, drinks and afternoon tea are served in summer, a romantic tiered garden leads down to a secluded pool. Rooms (all ensuite) are comfortable, maintaining a chic country style with quaint original details. The renowned cuisine entices people from far and wide to sample the delectable five course dinner in the courtyard. Open March to October.

What is there to do in the area? Walking, cycling, châteaux visiting, market towns, bastides, lakes and mountains. What kind of breakfast do you offer? Continental - freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh and dried fruit, muesli, cereals, fromage blanc, local cheese and charcuterie, croissants, other pastries and breads. Tea, coffee or hot choc. Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? We have a restaurant open in the evening. Recommendations we have, but they change from time to time but at the moment some very good ones Which are your most popular room types, and why? Lavande and Coquelicots. What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms ? We have two family suites (each with two bedrooms en-suite, one room with a big double bed and the other with two singles beds.) What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers? I would say that Camon is where they can properly relax and feel part of the French countryside. As if you’ve left the 21st century- you can pretend that the rest of the world doesn’t exist.
"Painted ceilings, flagged floors, velvet drapes, and 18th-century furnishings all add to the magnificence at this extraordinary property."
