An immaculately converted, romantic Masseria set amongst olive groves and cacti just north of the baroque city of Lecce and 30 minutes from Brindisi. With just nine suites, it offers the ultimate in laid-back luxury. Rooms have large floor to ceiling windows, arched ceilings and exposed stone walls to keep them cool in summer, and delicate cast iron beds. Ground floor rooms have private gardens and huge bathrooms with al fresco showers and outdoor baths. Glass walls and colourful rugs lend a designer look to the ancient tufo and taupe construction.
Outside, six walled gardens of orange, lemon, pomegranate and plum trees harbour a generous pool with secluded daybeds, firepits at night, and plenty of quiet spaces to lounge around on hammocks. while the restaurant offers the best of Puglian cuisine (‘cucina povera’) with much of the produce coming from the kitchen garden. Experiences on offer include yoga and cooking classes.

But of all the many reasons to stay here, it is Maria Carla Pennetta’s cooking that I will remember with the greatest pleasure.
