About Westendorf

The lovely Tyrolean town of Westendorf lies in the heart of the Blixen Valley, surrounded by snow-topped mountains, forests and rolling pastures: an idyllic rural escape. Accommodation options are wide-ranging and suitable for a host of budgets, with everything from simple self-catering apartments to lovely Alpine hotels equipped for active family holidays. The best places to stay in Westendorf are welcoming and laid-back, offering the ideal base for a winter or summer break in a spectacularly pretty part of Austria.

Westendorf has an impressively long history. Burial chambers brimming with ancient Bronze Age artefacts have been uncovered in the area, which was later occupied by the Romans, before becoming a thriving medieval market town. Considerable wealth from a 16th century mining boom was poured into the town's construction: hence the charming streets and onion-domed churches which attract modern-day travellers.

Summer visitors can explore the lush Windau Valley on foot or mountain bike, with hiking and cycling trails criss-crossing the landscape. This is also paragliding country, and there’s no better way to admire the undulating fields and craggy mountains than from the air! Most hotels will be happy to arrange everything from paragliding to cycling or archery. The Schauzuichi Market, too, is in full swing every Thursday, with live folk music, handicrafts and fresh produce for purchase from local farmers in the heart of town. Think long summer days in a scenic Alpine setting — perfect for a relaxed, outdoorsy break.

In the winter months, Westendorf is a popular family skiing destination, known for its low altitude (just 802 metres), fantastic ski schools — and gentle nursery slopes for beginners who are still finding their feet. Whilst there is fairly limited access to the off-piste slopes which are found at higher altitude, there are well over 160km of pistes to conquer, and some great cross-country tracks. Snowboarders and freestylers can hone their skills at the Boarders Playground, a great snow-park promising plenty of adrenaline-filled fun. Book a couple of sessions with Ski School Westendorf, head out on wintry hiking trails or perfect your technique at the snow-park!

A classic Alpine town with lots to keep the whole family entertained, Westendorf makes for a great summer or winter holiday base. Nab a room at one of the best places to stay in Westendorf for comfort, great value and beautiful views!
