About St Andrews, New Brunswick

St. Andrews is a seaside resort on the south west corner of New brunswick, and lies about thirty minutes from the border with the United States. The best places to stay in St. Andrews are mostly located right in the centre of town and offer the perfect base for exploring and enjoying this popular holiday spot.

St. Andrews-by-the-Sea as it is also known, was settled by United Empire Loyalists following the American war of independence. Many of these people transported their homes North by barge from New England - some of which still stand. St. Andrews became Canada’s first proper seaside destination around the turn of the twentieth century and attracted many of the country’s more prominent families.

The town is situated on the Bay of Funday which experiences some of the highest tides in the world - known to rise to over 28 feet. There is a rich diversity of sea life and many coves and islands to explore. It's also a very popular area with both painters and photographers with its covered bridges and lighthouses.

For the sightseer there are:

  • the Kingsbrae Horticultural Gardens - in full bloom every spring,
  • the Ross Memorial Museum,
  • the St. Andrews Blockhouse (the old gaol).
  • The Fairmount Algonquin hotel is a landmark in the centre of town - built and once owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway.
