Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia’s, and one of Europe’s, most beautiful areas. It attracts over one million visitors each year and the best places to stay in Plitvica Selo are situated right on its doorstep.
The main feature of this 73,000 acre park is a unique system of 16 lakes which are interconnected by waterfalls. Created by the confluence of several rivers and underground waterways, over the years natural dams have formed and a system of cascades links the various lakes. The area became a national Park in 1949 and with new roads in the 1960’s, hotels were built.
In 1979 UNESCO designated this a place of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and it has become popular for film locations. The lakes have distinctive colours that change from azure to green and from grey to blue. Much of the land is covered in forest and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna - including bears, wolves, lynx, eagles and over 100 species of bird. It is a mecca for walkers and hikers.
