About Autun

Once a bustling Roman city, Autun boasts impressive ancient ruins, as well as a burgeoning food and drink scene. Now home to a population of around 15,000, this little city has an appealing buzz, and is hugely popular with visitors to the Burgundy region. Whether you're visiting with friends and eager to sample top bars and eateries or planning a more laid-back family trip, Autun's accommodation options offer something for everyone. Intimate and charming, the best places to stay in Autun promise a very warm welcome.

Autun’s Roman-era landmarks are hard to miss. The amphitheatre, once one of the largest theatres in Europe, was built for audiences of up to 20,000, whilst the Porte Saint-André and the Temple de Janus remain imposing even in the 21st Century. The Cathédrale Saint-Lazare reveals a strong Roman influence and the Musée Rolin details Autun’s cultural heritage through artefacts and artwork; both are well worth visiting.

Trek to the Briscou Cascade to experience Burgundy’s natural landscapes, and cycle or horse ride between picturesque vineyards before you pop in for tours and tastings. Do be aware that the best places to stay in Autun can fill up fast during harvest season, as well as in the peak summer months. Book your trip well in advance!
