About Chantilly

Just 24 miles north-east of Paris, Chantilly has long been famed for its cream and lace-making. It's also a horse racing hub, with more than a hundred stables set amidst its rolling fields and forests. Chantilly’s imposing châteaux are its other major attraction, and many of the best places to stay in Chantilly are tucked within these magnificent historic buildings.

For a sense of the region’s fabled past, look no further than the spectacular Château de Chantilly, which offers excellent guided tours. The Musée Condé, within the Château, boasts the oldest collection of historic artwork in France, and is a must-see for art aficionados. Bequeathed to the Institut de France by Henri d’Orléans in 1897, this iconic landmark and private collection are real treasures.

No visit to France’s horse racing capital is complete without a trip to the striking Great Stables. A 186-metre-long building with a huge dome, this 18th-century gem is home to 280 horses and 500 dogs. The intriguing Living Museum of the Horse is also housed here. Catch some of the area’s 2,600 horses at the race track, or take a ride through Chantilly Forest on horseback with an expert guide. Hiking and cycling trails also await. Book well in advance if travelling during the glamorous racing season; the best places to stay in Chantilly will fill up fast.
