Set between Skiáthos and Alonissos in the glittering turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, Skopelos is a verdant island of wonderfully varied landscapes. Craggy cliffs characterise one side of the island, whilst the other offers sheltered bays — some of which were featured in Mamma Mia!, which was filmed on the island in 2007. Our Gurus have taken things a step further, recommending the hotel in which the cast were based as one of the best places to stay on Skopelos.
Most visitors arrive in Skopelos Town, a pretty port on the northeastern side of the island. Delve into the town’s history at the Folklore Museum, admire curiosities at the Vakratsa Mansion Museum — housed in a beautiful 18th-century villa — and stroll out to the whitewashed Panagitsa Tower for dazzling views back over town. You’ll find top-notch seafood eateries and friendly bars lining the harbour, perfect for long lazy lunches with a glass of ouzo or two.
Beyond the town is a pine and olive grove-filled interior criss-crossed with hiking and cycling trails, and fringed by lovely beaches. Kick back at Panormos, Glysteri or Kastani beaches, where you’ll find crystal clear waters and a lively buzz in the summer months. There are snorkelling and sailing opportunities aplenty as well. Head up to pine-clad Cape Amarandos for beautiful views, or to the iconic Agios Ioannis Chapel, a stunning hilltop landmark. With summer being peak season, you’ll find that rooms at the best places to stay in Skopelos — and on the Sporades Islands generally — fill up fast. Travel in late spring or early autumn for a more tranquil experience.
