About Castellammare di Stabia

Castellammare di Stabia is a picturesque spa town, built upon the ruins of the ancient spa resort of Stabia, which was destroyed in the same volcanic eruption that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. It’s the heat and minerals in the volcanic sulphur springs that make Castellammare di Stabia’s thermal baths so special. And the recently excavated, and carefully restored Roman villas that encourage travellers to do more than relax in the healing waters of one of the 28 thermal springs. Castellammare di Stabia is beautiful too, with golden beaches and an historic old town, complete with an impressive cathedral, several Renaissance churches, plenty of art, and rows of charming stone houses. The best places to stay in Castellammare di Stabia are great alternatives to the big and touristy hotels in Naples, with our Gurus top pick offering spellbinding sea views.

Castellammare di Stabia is a very easy train ride from both Pompeii and Naples, and the best places to stay in Castellammare di Stabia would make an excellent base for exploring the whole Bay of Naples. And because Castellammare di Stabia is so little known in comparison to centres like Naples and Sorrento, accommodation here can be excellent value.

Castellammare di Stabia isn’t all historic charm, restored ruins, sunshine and spa baths, it’s also a commercial centre, with a huge shipyard. In the summer Castellammare di Stabia’s New Thermal Baths complex hosts a number of concerts, exhibitions, conventions and open air cinema events, so it’s a lively destination from June to the end of  August. So it’s a good idea to book one of the best places to stay in Castellammare di Stabia well in advance if you’re planning a summer visit.
