About Montefalco

Montefalco is one of Umbria’s many stunning hilltop towns, but our Gurus have special affection for it because of its position: on a hill carpeted with olive trees and grape vines, overlooking the Tiber and Clitunno rivers, close to Perugia and Spoleto. There isn’t much accommodation available in Montefalco proper, it’s predominantly converted villas and palazzos, but our Gurus still think the best places to stay in Montefalco make some of the best bases for exploring this whole region.

The limited accommodation within Montefalco’s walls is due to the challenge of developing within the restricted space inside these historic walls, but there are plenty of excellent accommodation options within a small radius of the historic centre. In fact on a clear day you can see some of them, including the L'Orto Degli Angeli, the Agriturismo La Ghirlanda, as the views from Montefalco are known to include the plains below the town.

Much of Montefalco’s architecture is pretty special, from its church-turned-museum to the palazzos turned small hotels, that make up the best places to stay in Montefalco. Expect to peek at frescoes as you navigate the narrow warren of streets.

The Best Places to Stay in Montefalco

Within Historic Montefalco

  • The Palazzo Bontadosi is an elegant palazzo, built for a Cardinal, just off the main square of Montefalco. It has just six rooms and suites, our favourites among them with original frescoes. The whole place is a wonder of original architecture and handicrafts, though the furnishings and decor are contemporary. There’s also a well equipped spa with an indoor saltwater pool, and an excellent restaurant and terrace bar.

  • As far as the weather is concerned, the best time to visit Montefalco is probably between April and June, when temperatures range from minimums of 6° C to maximums of 25° C. While lots of people visit in summer, many of us find it a bit too hot. Christmas is beautiful and cheerful, and Easter is a big celebration; both offer plenty in the way of festivities, including the annual Terre di Sagrantino. There’s also a major wine festival in September.
