About Sestriere

Perched on the alpine pass linking Val Susa and Val Chisone, little Sestriere is completely surrounded by dramatic mountains, many of which have been adopted into the Via Lattea ski region. In the warmer months, Sestriere has a population of around a thousand, but during the ski season it flourishes towards twenty thousand. There are plenty of traditional hotels and chalets in the small town, but our Gurus picks for the best places to stay in Sestriere are just outside town, on the surrounding slopes and valleys.

The Via Lattea ski fields have around 400kms of slopes, stretching in elevation from 1,372m to 2,789m, and with 69 lifts to help you explore. Around 60% of the slopes are now covered in snowmaking facilities too. There are certainly some spectacularly memorable backdrops here, and some great off piste skiing options. Sestriere was one of Italy’s first purpose-built ski resorts, so many of the best places to stay in Sestriere are really well set up for skiers, in convenient spots for the slopes, or the lifts, and with great storage and hire facilities.

The best places to stay in Sestriere are generally a bit quieter in the summer, though the alpine landscape still holds much appeal — especially when hosting the Tour de France, or the Giro d'Italia come through. Sestriere is also where you can find Europe's highest golf course, set amidst stunning alpine scenery. There’s also a local adventure park, where you can spend a fun-filled day zipping around the forest using ziplines, climbing ropes and more.

The Best Places to Stay in Sestriere

For Families

  • The Shackleton Mountain Resort is within the Via Lattea Olympic ski area, perfect for skiers, cross-country skiers, mountain bikers, hikers and horse riding. This is a modern hotel, with just 19 rooms and suites, but the decor includes wood panelling, so it's got the chalet vibe too. There's also the stunning alpine views to help that, and the traditional alpine cuisine served in the restaurant. Just minutes from the lifts, this is an easy choice for families.

For Alpine Charms

  • Il Capricorno is a charming chalet hotel in a picturesque valley in the Cozie Alps. This is your classic alpine option: appearing to be all wood inside and out, with antique finishes, plenty of cosy throws, open fires, exposed beams and oil paintings. There are just nine rooms and suites, with options for both couples and families, plus a lovely lounge and bar, and a restaurant serving Piedmont classics. The perfect escape, or ski base.

Travel Information

  • Turin Airport is Sestriere’s closest large international airport, about 90kms away — which is about an hour and a half drive, or around three hours by public transport: take the bus to Port Nuova station, then hop on a train to Oulx, from where there's a regular bus service that'll take you to Sestriere. Oulx is on the train line to Gare De Lyon, so this is a relatively easy place to get to via train.
  • If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • Sestriere is a ski resort, so most visitors are coming for the ski season, which runs from December through until April most years. Sestriere is also wonderful in the summer, though, with a myriad of alpine adventures to experience. Unfortunately hosts know how wonderful it is in the summer too, and high season rates apply almost all year round, with a brief dips in the shoulder seasons around May and October.
