About Torno

Torno is actually a cluster of four villages, all overlooking Lake Como, on a headland overlooking the other-western end of the lake, across from pretty Moltrasio. It’s picturesque, and surprisingly peaceful, with bright and colourful classic Italian architecture, old churches, magnificent villas, narrow winding streets and splendid views. Some of the best places to stay in Torno have been converted from the aforementioned magnificent villas, and the mix of accommodation here runs towards the elegant, featuring an impressive design hotel and some very chic B&Bs, as well as some more traditional waterfront hotels.

Torno is so near to Como that it was once in commercial competition with its wealthy neighbour, and it diminished in size after Como’s forces besieged it. These days it’s a useful five kilometres away, which makes it a great choice for anyone wanting a base to explore the southern end of the lake.

Some of the best places to stay in Torno are popular with walkers and cyclists too: you’re close to several mountain trails, and there’s even a paragliding centre in the crescent of the mountains. Torno is also a popular sightseeing hub, so even if you don’t opt to book into one of the hotels here, you might still want to look up their restaurants — there are some incredible places to eat and drink in the town. It also boasts several of Lake Como’s most beautiful churches, and a handful of the lake’s most elegant villas.

For a Special Occasion

  • Supremely stylish and elegant, Il Sereno could be considered the contemporary version of a grand hotel. it has just 30 rooms and suites, stacked neatly, so that their huge glass fronts all open out onto the lake, and they all have incredible private balcony views. The restaurant is just as fantastic as that of a grand hotel, but in a less opulent setting, and the pool is smaller, but so is the number of rooms. Perfect for stylish honeymooners!

Travel Information

  • Torno has a few local international airports: Milan’s Linate, Malpensa and Bergamo Airport are about 45minutes away by road, or about an hour and a half by public transport. While Brescia-Montichiari and Verona-Villafranca are both close to two hours drive, or about four hours on the train via Milan.
  • If you want to hire a car — which we strongly advise if you want to explore the surrounding area — we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • Lake Como has a mild climate that allows for sub-tropical plants like grapevines and olive trees to grow throughout the year. In winter it does get chilly, and in summer it can be humid, but broadly speaking it has some of the best weather conditions in Europe. April through to October are the busiest months for visitors, warm and sunny, perfect for a lake break. The water of the lake even heats up during summer, and can get to 20°C come July! So if you are visiting at this time it’s worth booking as much as you can in advance.
