About Olhos de Agua

A friendly fishing village set on the sandy shores of the Algarve, Olhos d'Agua is framed by cliffs of rusted sandstone. In many ways a quintessential seaside destination, it's a wonderful introduction to this part of southern Portugal for young families and laid-back couples alike. With the best places to stay in Olhos d'Agua ranging from simple restored farmhouses to luxurious resorts, there's plenty to appeal to everyone.

Olhos d'Agua, meaning 'eye of water', is named for the freshwater springs which bubble to the surface at low tide. Bright blue fishermen's huts line the shoreline where fisherfolk tend to their nets; it's well worth rising early to see the morning's catch hauled in and delivered to the restaurants which line the harbour. The village's most notable historic landmark is the Torre da Medronheira, a 17th-century watchtower with a commanding view of the sea.

Spend your days strolling along some of the best beaches in the Algarve, with opportunities aplenty to surf, swim, kayak and build sandcastles as a family. Slower-paced than the nearby towns of Albufeira and Vilamoura, Olhos d'Agua also has quieter beaches. Praia da Falesia is a favourite, with shallow rockpools, secluded coves and some inviting sea-facing bars and restaurants. Boat trips for cave visits and dolphin-spotting come highly recommended! Return to one of the best places to stay in Olhos d'Agua for relaxed evenings of Portugese wine and fresh seafood.
