Tiny Qatar, is just a peninsula of sandy land jutting out into the Persian Gulf, but it’s very wealthy, with its wonderful glass and concrete metropolis, Doha, and it’s very exciting and varied. The highlights can mostly be found in Doha, but they include a world class Museum of Islamic Art and one of the most magical souks in the Gulf. At the moment our Guru’s recommendations for the best places to stay in Qatar are centred around Doha, but like this nation, that could change at any minute. What the best places to stay in Qatar have in common are striking modern design, luxurious features and amazing views.
If you’re interested in the Middle East then this is a great place to come. There’s an impressive array of restaurants, a lively cultural scene and some amazing historic treasures to uncover. If you want to learn about this region then there are practical experiences to be had - be led around the labyrinthine souks, learn about the cuisine at the Katara Cultural Village, learn falconry, or about pearling, learn to play aldama (like backgammon) or to appreciate all the magic of Arabic and Turkish sweets - and enjoy them with your proper coffee. Or else just mess about on the incredible sand dunes, stroll the Al-Corniche, the bit of Doha running alongside the bay, carefully land-filled into its crescent shape and lined with cycling and pedestrian paths. Or watch the crazy camel races or just get involved with all the watersports on offer.
Outside Doha, the highlights are probably Khor Al Udeid, the inland sea, a place of endless rolling sand dunes, and Zubarah, which is where you’ll find the ruins of a deserted city and fort.
