About Simon's Town

Taking its name from a Dutch governor, Simon van der Stel, who was stationed in Simon's Town during the 17th-century, it's a historic spot with plenty of tales. It is most popular for its laidback feel, high street lined with antique shops, inviting coffee shops, and is known for its fresh seafood restaurants. Another big draw is Boulder's Beach, South Africa's largest colony of African penguins, where travellers can walk amongst their nesting grounds, and swim and sunbathe next to them. Used to visitors, they're pretty non-plussed and are very happy for a photo opportunity - just don't get too close! Our collection of the best places to stay in Simon's Town showcase the best family-run, quirky, boutique hotels, right along the coast.

Located on the shores of False Bay, Simon's Town is also the home of South Africa's Naval Base and has a long maritime history, which can be explored at SA Naval Museum. A delightful reminder of this, is a larger than life statue of Just Nuisance, in Jubilee Square, a Great Dane whose famed escapades in the 1930s, resulted in him becoming the first dog ever to be officially enrolled in the Royal Navy.
