Tucked between Unawatuna and Talpe, the little village of Mihiripenna is in many ways a classic south coast destination. Brightly painted houses line winding lanes fringed by verdant vegetation, three-wheelers zip between small shops and boys gather in front of the temple to play cricket each evening. The ocean — and dazzling Dalawella Beach — are just across the bustling coast road, but the village has an appealingly friendly, laid-back feel. The best places to stay in Mihiripenna channel that same charm.
It’s likely to be hot and sticky, but it’s still well worth ambling around some of the village on foot. You’ll spot huge piles of husked coconuts, dogs snoozing in the sunshine, well-tended little gardens, and families chatting in the streets. The white-painted temple and nearby sacred bodhi tree are stunning, and not to be missed. Just up the road, the Dog Care Clinic does amazing work in the community; speak to their team about a tour or donation. Cycling trips with Idle Bikes also come highly recommended.
Heading in the other direction, you’ll find the tranquil lagoon at Dalawella perfect for early morning or sunset dips. Spot turtles gliding in the shallows, pick a perch at Wijaya for a cold beer and see the sky awash with pinks and oranges in the evening. Gorgeous Galle Fort is 20 minutes’ drive away, and there are a plethora of great cafés, bars and boutiques in nearby villages. Mihiripenna’s family-friendly feel has its own appeal, however. With fantastic fare, refreshing swimming pools and lovely hosts, you’d be forgiven for not venturing beyond your pick of the best places to stay in Mihiripenna!
