About Eindhoven

Eindhoven, the Dutch capital of design and technology, is the fifth-largest city in the Netherlands. At the turn of the 20th century, however, it was a small Brabantine village, and its meteoric rise can be predominately attributed to the establishment of the Phillips lightbulb company, a company that gave Eindhoven its nickname: the City of Light. Walking through this breathtaking post-industrial city, you start to see why: far from the picturesque narrow cobbled lanes of Amsterdam, Eindhoven looks and sounds like a city of the future, with buildings and bike lanes adorned with mesmerising art installations like that of the Van Gogh project, and in Dutch Design Week, mid October, every street is lit up with the tantalising works of artists from all around the world. Eindhoven isn't for history-buffs, but for those craving an ecstatic nightlife, award-winning restaurants, chic boutiques and antiques markets, Eindhoven is the city for you. It makes up for its scant heritage with its designer-shop-abundant streets, like that of the Stratumseind, and cool contemporary art galleries, like that of the Van Abbemuseum. Trendy, bustling, vibrant and soaring in technicolour, the best places to stay in Eindhoven are perfect for a romantic break.

What not to miss

  • Visit the Van Abbemuseum and admire the modern artworks on display, such as those of Picasso or Chagall.
  • Rent a bike and cycle down the Van Gogh art installation project...
  • Check out the Eindhoven Museum and see a reconstructed Iron Age village!
  • See one of the few old churches in the city, the Oude Toren, a 14th century Gothic beauty.
  • Be sure to see the exhibitions on during Dutch Design Week in October!
  • Head to the arts and antiques market on Saturday morning, in Demer, the city centre.
  • For a shopping spree, why not wander down the Stratumseind, the longest nightlife street in the Netherlands, with countless shops and over 54 restaurants - what more could you want!
