About Frome

A charming town set between the Mendip Hills and Cranborne Chase Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Frome is a great destination for a romantic weekend away. Boasting a rich history and a thriving arts scene, this Somerset town is jam-packed with things to do and see. Accommodation options range from simple B&Bs to chic restaurants with rooms, fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets. Many of the best places to stay in Frome are right in the heart of the action, within easy reach of all that this lovely town has to offer.

Famed for its picturesque setting, Frome’s charm lies in its old-world aesthetic. The High Street is lined with independent boutiques, galleries, cafes and eateries, whilst the surrounding area boasts beautiful countryside, ideal for long walks or cycling trips. Once larger than Bath, Frome grew as a result of the wool and cloth industry, and later became known for metal-working and printing. Highlights include the striking Church of St Mary the Virgin, the Frome Museum and the Frome Art Gallery. The town also boasts an impressive array of restaurants, bars and live music venues — ideal for a fun evening out with friends or family. The annual Frome Festival — held every July — is renowned for showcasing some of the country’s most exciting new talent.

If you’re into your food and drink, you’ll find plenty of top-notch producers in the area, including cheesemakers and cider makers. Don’t miss trying some at Frome's regular weekly markets!

Whether you’re travelling as a couple or as a family, this is a brilliant destination for an active break. The Mendip Hills are teeming with hiking trails and cycling paths, whilst there are ample opportunities to try horse riding or go fishing on the River Frome. If you’re travelling with kids, don’t miss visits to the Frome Valley Leisure Centre or the Mendip Steam Railway — both are great for a family day out.

Don't forget that this is a popular little town (especially during Festival season), so if you want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in Frome, you'll need to get organised and book well ahead.

  • Archangel is a chic and sophisticated restaurant situated in the historic heart of the town. The coaching inn itself dates back to 1311, though things are a little more up-to-date now! Downstairs in the restaurant you can expect dishes featuring locally sourced, seasonal produce. A spoiling stay.
  • Bistro Lotte is another good choice if you don't want to go far to find your supper! Here there are ten rooms with a classic yet contemporary feel (there's even a family room if you're travelling with kids), and a fantastic french restaurant serving traditional bistro style fare.
