About Sark

Sark must be one if the UK’s most unique destinations; famed for its almost feudal governance, and total lack of cars and streetlights – inhabitants and guests alike must make do with horse-drawn travel. Sark is small, but long and thin, with crenelated edges, so it’s got a long, and picturesque coastline, rich in wildlife, as well as stunning beaches. Some of the best places to stay on Sark are those that make the most of the spectacular coastline – by offering incredible views of it, or being close enough to enjoy it easily.

Because of its size, and unique lack of motorised transport, Sark is ideal for exploring on foot, or on two wheels, so its an ideal destination for keen walkers and cyclists, as well as anyone with an interest in history. A fact worth remembering is that the numbers on signposts on Sark refer to how many minutes it will take you to walk somewhere, rather than the distance in kilometres or miles.

As well as its miles of coastline, which include idyllic sandy beaches and dramatic clifftops, Sark’s two main areas are connected by a narrow isthmus called La Coupee, which is about 90 metres long, with a drop of about 100 metres on each side. It’s a pretty dramatic spot, and one well worth photographing. Sark also has several natural swimming pools, and a fascinating tidal cave system that runs around the coastline.

As with all the Channel Islands this is a very popular summer destination. So if you want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in Sark during July or August, you'll need to get organised and book well ahead.

The Best Places to stay on Sark

For Families

  • Stocks Hotel is the perfect setting for relaxing in style. Originally built in 1741, and run as a hotel since 1895, this property has been refurbished to include all the mod. cons – including a large outdoor pool and a gym converted from the stables. There’s plenty to do here from yoga classes to croquet, birdwatching, tennis, art classes or even a scuba course. But the picturesque and super peaceful surrounds also make this the perfect place for doing very little. The 23 rooms and suites include some ideal options for families, and the kids’ menu, and private splash pool will also appeal to anyone travelling with little ones.

For a Rural Escape

  • In a peaceful spot on the even quieter end of Sark, La Sablonnerie is a collection of 22 cottages and homes all decorated with a traditional, rustic feel. You need a horse and carriage to transport you here, and it feels like you're being taken back in time! The owner/manager wants it to be an oasis of good living and courtesy, and does her best to make sure this sentiment is in everything they do – from the home-grown food served in the restaurant, to the service they offer.

Travel Information

  • Both Jersey and Guernsey have airports; Jersey Airport is about an hour and twenty minutes away from Sark – first you need to get to St. Hellier, and then the ferry across to Sark, which takes just over an hour; Guernsey Airport is about ten minutes by car from St. Peter Port, which is a 45 minute ferry trip to Sark.
  • If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • The Channel Islands enjoy more sunshine than most of the UK, while still remaining lush and green. They make an ideal beach break, especially if you’re interested in a bucket-and-spade holiday, and there are some wonderful walking opportunities. Because of their sandy beaches, the Channel Islands are a popular summer holiday destination, but there are lots of reasons to visit the Channel Islands in spring and early autumn too.
