About Montauk
On the eastern tip of Long Island, beyond the glitz of the Hamptons, lies lovely laid-back Montauk. A charming beachside fishing town with great surf and a fun, chic feel, Montauk has long been popular with New Yorkers looking to escape the city. Home to everything from low-key B&Bs to luxury beach clubs, accommodation options in Montauk cater to a wide range of tastes and budgets. Our selection of the best places to stay in Montauk embodies the lovely retro-cool appeal of this trendy surf haven, promising the ideal weekend away for foodies and outdoorsy travellers.
One of Montauk’s greatest attractions is undoubtedly the beach. Gorgeous Ditch Plains Beach is a huge hit with surfers, though it’s also perfect for afternoons of lazy sunbathing and seaside strolls. Lake Montauk, on the other hand, is home to New York State’s largest sporting fishing fleet, whilst Deep Hollow Ranch — the oldest working ranch in the country — offers horse riding treks across its 3000 acres of beach and countryside. Explore Hither Hills State Park for hiking, cycling, fishing and swimming in the summer, or try Montauk State Point Park for wintry seal-watching walks. Whether you’re keen on kayaking, sailing or living like a cowboy out on the ranch, Montauk has plenty to keep lovers of the great outdoors entertained.
Visit the town’s famed 200-year-old lighthouse for spectacular views, and experience a snapshot of local history at Second House, a cottage built for East Hampton shepherds in the 18th century. The oldest surviving structure in town, Second House also boasts the intriguing Montauk Indian Museum, showcasing artefacts from the area’s original Native American inhabitants. Regular film nights, talks and events offer a valuable insight into Montauk’s past.
Don’t miss strolling through town, where there are hip cafes, delectable seafood eateries and fun bars to sample and savour. Thirst-quenchers from the Montauk Brewing Company are a real treat — especially on summer evenings abuzz with live music. Whilst most of the best places to stay in Montauk are close to the beach, one of our favourite retro summer camp-style hideaways is tucked inland, and wonderful for chilled campfire evenings in the garden. Montauk is a hugely popular destination, so book well in advance to avoid missing out!
