About St Michaels

Sitting pretty on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, St Michaels is widely regarded as one of the USA’s top coastal towns. A charming historic community on the Miles River — leading to striking Chesapeake Bay — St Michaels has a long maritime heritage and offers a wealth of opportunities for the modern-day visitor to get out on the water. Accommodation options range from simple, self-catering stays to indulgent waterfront resorts fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets. The best places to stay in St Michaels promise impressive views of the water, perfect for quiet contemplation or an adventurous holiday.

Amble through town to admire period homes dating back to the 17th Century, popping into shops, cafés and eateries. The St Michaels Museum at St Mary’s Square has an intriguing local history display, and offers excellent walking tours of the town — ideal for history buffs. For a wider sense of the area, visit the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. The Phillips Wharf Environmental Centre focuses on preservation, and is a great place to encourage children’s interest in nature. Nearby Tilghman Island is also well worth visiting.

Head down to the harbour to watch the fishermen hauling in the day’s catch, or to take a cruise around the bay. The Miles River is brilliant for kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing and fishing, too. Lessons for adults or little ones can easily be arranged through reputable local sailing schools. Back on land, you can follow cycling and walking trails, or go birdwatching with a knowledgeable guide.

Round off your days with fresh seafood feasts as you soak up superb sunsets over the water. Warm and characterful, the best places to stay in St Michaels offer a very special place to unwind ahead of another day of discovery.
