Turn back time as you journey along the Grand Canyon Railway, through Arizona’s forested landscapes to peer over the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This classic railway journey has been running for more than a century — and the trip begins in the small, historic town of Williams. Perhaps best known as the gateway to the Grand Canyon National Park, this friendly, laid-back community is also a great stop on a road trip along the old Route 66. Accommodation options include intimate hideaways as well as large hotels with extensive facilities, well-suited to couples, families or groups of friends. The best places to stay in Williams range from cosy B&Bs tucked amidst the treetops to a heritage hotel right alongside the Williams Depot, perfect for a train ride!
The Grand Canyon Railway is undoubtedly Williams’ biggest attraction, and there’s lots to explore at the historic railway depot itself. History buffs can also head to the Planes of Fame Air Museum, Pete’s Route 66 Gas Station Museum or the Ash Fork Route 66 Museum. Little ones will be especially excited to spot black bears, bighorn sheep and grey wolves in the 160-acre wildlife park at Bearizona or to visit the Grand Canyon Deer Farm.
There’s hiking, horse riding and mountain biking in the surrounding area, as well as striking views from atop Bill Williams Mountain or Sycamore Canyon. The Grand Canyon National Park abounds with things to see and do — speak to an expert guide or to your hotel hosts for their recommendations. If you're in town for a while, take a day trip to lively Flagstaff for excellent museums, eateries and creative events.
Round off your days with top-notch fare and a locally-brewed beer or two in town, before putting your feet up at one of the best places to stay in Williams.
