The Rocks is the oldest part of Sydney, as we know it. This was the first part to be colonised, and still has some of the country’s oldest buildings. It’s also very beautiful. And not just because of its position on the harbour, with incredible views of the whole blue sparkling swathe of it, but also because of its honey sandstone buildings, cobbled streets and tiny, steep laneways. Which are where you’ll find some of the best hotels in The Rocks - enjoying those views accompanied by a cocktail or two. Or a beer in one of the pubs dating back to the era of convicts and settlers.
The Rocks feels very different to Sydney’s CBD, just up George Street, it has boutiques and pubs rather than ‘retail opportunities’ and wine bars. And when it comes to landmarks, The Rocks has a couple of corkers: only the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with a pylon in The Rocks and another on Milsons Point, by Luna Park, and the wonderful Sydney Observatory. It also has a couple of restored houses: Cadman’s Cottage, which is a colonial cottage, Susannah Place, which is a row of four terrace houses, and the Colonial House Museum. The Rocks Market on the weekend is excellent, as is pretty much every offering by the Sydney Theatre Company. And there are plenty of places to eat and drink.
