Salzburg's Old Town is the pride of Austria for good reason. Its UNESCO-listed winding, cobbled, medieval streets and buzzing market squares, all framed by looming mountains, gives it the feel of a fairytale town. You'll be wowed by the baroque architecture on the banks of the river and the baby-sized violin played by a (very) young Mozart in the museum, the iron guild signs hanging from the busy shopping streets, and one of the oldest cemeteries in the world at the foot of a rocky mountain. Naturally, all the best hotels in Salzburg's Old Town are set in medieval buildings. Some of them are chic design-led boltholes, others are romantic getaways. We have also tracked down a special hotel, run by an order of Benedictine monks — not to be missed!

- Arthotel Blaue Gans is set in a 14th century building at the foot of Hohensalzburg Fortress and has been welcome guests since 1350. Visitors lovel it not only for its stuccoed ceilings and wooden floors, but its proximity to so many historic sites including Mozart's birthplace. Inside, you'll find a restaurant set within medieval stone walls. Outside, a secluded Mediterrenean herb garden. Yet its heritage stands in contrast to its chic decor, with its light-filled designer rooms all filled with original, striking modern art.
- Another great option for history buffs, Goldener Hirsch is a luxury hotel set in a medieval building, also only steps away from Mozart's birthplace. It's a regal and elegant affair, with antlers on the walls, while the light-filled rooms are full of antiques and colourful furnishings. There's a sophisticated, old-world Austrian vibe — the two restaurants serve hearty Austrian fare, while the bar is something of a local institution. The perfect base camp to do some sightseeing from!
- Boutique Hotel am Dom is another historic property, set in a beautifully renovated 800 year-old townhouse in the heart of the old town. The contrasts are delightful: exposed stone walls and wooden beams in contemporary rooms with pop art and free-standing bathtubs. A sleek, 4-star boutique hotel just a stone's throw from all the sights.

- A stay at Haus St Benedikt is a stay like none other. This minimalist, light-filled property is a working monastery run by an order of Benedictine monks. Most of the rooms are inhabited by young novices, so expect a haven of tranquility and peace. It's a short walk from the sights of Salzburg. If you want the experience of having breakfast with a bunch of cheerful, helpful monks every morning, you better book this fast.
