The Piazza della Signoria, in Florence’s Historic Centre, probably felt like the centre of everything during the Renaissance. This is where you’ll find the Duomo, and if you were to draw a circle around the maze of narrow streets and palatial piazzas around it, it would include the Uffizi, the Accademia Gallery, the Pitti Palace and the Bargello. Plus churches, cafes, bars restaurants, boutiques… It still feels very much like the centre of everything now. And the 5 best hotels near the Piazza della Signoria are definitely some of the best places to stay in Florence.
Take your place in one of the cafes around the square and admire the many sculptures and varying styles of architecture that surround you, from the 14th century Palazzo Vecchio to the equally ancient and beautiful Loggia dei Lanzi, which now doubles as an open air sculpture gallery, and behind which you'll find the Uffizi.
The Uffizi, full of art owned by the Medicis, needs plenty of time, and, if you want to really experience the grandeur of Florence as the Medici’s did you can travel from the Uffizi to their other palaces, the Palazzo Pitti and the Palazzo Vecchio, via the kilometre long Corridoio Vasariano, which links them all. And is linked with more great art. Some of us will also need to leave plenty of time for the Via de’ Tornabuoni, an incredibly beautiful street lined with Renaissance palaces and Italian fashion houses.
The Residenza d’Epoca in Piazza Della Signoria has just ten individually designed rooms - but they’re quite something, some with frescoed ceilings and views of the Piazza and all with parquet floors and antique furnishings. The communal breakfast is highly regarded and this is a great option for families or groups as there are three small apartments (sleeping from 2 to 5) on offer too.
