Next to Makrigianni and just a few blocks south of Plaka and the throbbing tourist heart of Athens, Koukaki is one of the city neighbourhoods that benefited most from the greening and pedestrianisation of the city centre – without being overrun by tourism. You'll find some of the best hotels in Koukaki on residential streets and little tree-shaded squares that are peaceful (by local standards) and dotted with pleasant small cafés, restaurants and street-food joints peddling favourite local snacks like tyropitta (cheese pastries) and giros. There's plenty of green space on Filopappou Hill, and you can walk to sights including the Acropolis and its museum and the Temple of Olympian Zeus in a matter of minutes. When it's time to go, Syngrou-Fix station has metro trains to the airport.
