The Chiado area centres around the Largo do Chiado, an elegant square between the Bairro Alto and Baixa neighbourhoods. This is a great part of Lisbon to be based in, as well as enjoying elegant surrounds and some fantastic cafes and bars, you’re close to many of the main sights, but you’re also close to the beach. Chiado is also known for its shopping, its museums and theatres. So the best hotels in Chiado make a great base for really getting the best out of this varied city.
As a rather sweet aside the name means ‘squeak’ in Portuguese, and is thought to come from the nickname of a popular 16th century poet, António Ribeiro, who lived in the area. You can see a bronze statue of him today in Chiado Square.
Chiado’s ‘headline’ attractions number the Chiado Museum, which was the Museum of Contemporary Art, Lisbon’s Opera House, the Bertrand Bookshop, which opened in 1747 and the Paris em Lisboa boutique, which opened in 1888. Obviously there are a lot of newer boutiques too, numerous galleries, and some excellent cafes and restaurants.
