Auckland is a city built around water, and one of the best ways to feel its modern pulse is to stay in one of the hotels near the redeveloped harbour and marina areas. These hotels near Auckland harbour offer ringside views of water traffic – from ferries to private super-yachts and cruise ships – while also being close to the trendy waterfront area of smart bars and restaurants. Boat trips across to Devonport, with its genteel air and wonderful Cheltenham beach, or to the beaches of Waiheke Island, are on the doorstep while it’s also easy strolling distance to the city’s Maritime Museum, or Art Gallery. Although we usually shy away from large, chain type properties, we have found that these brands offer the best hotels near Auckland harbour.
For a hotel stay
- Looking as if it’s floating on the water, the shiny towers of Hilton Auckland have one of the city’s best hotel locations. You’ll find it hard to tear yourself away from the rooms’ floor-to-ceiling windows, most with balconies and all with a cool, white-on-white design. There’s plenty to keep families occupied, too, including an outdoor pool, gym and family suites.
- Another hotel near Auckland harbour, and also with a pool, is the Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour. Overlooking the marina, it offers 157 slick, modern rooms – including family suites - plus a spa and gym. It’s walking distance from downtown Auckland as well as the ferry terminal for boat trips and sight-seeing.

- If you prefer more flexibility, Latitude 37 offers luxurious apartments ranging from one-bedroom to four-bedroom, making them ideal for families and groups of friends. Smart and modern, they’re fully-equipped with kitchens and dining areas and have great views over the marina and harbour.
