The city of London is more than just the financial centre. Here modern skyscrapers rise up between historically significant buildings, including St Paul's Cathedral. The affluence of the area has bought a world-class range of bars and restaurants, while the Barbican Arts Centre has a wide selection of performances. As you can imagine, this area has obvious appeal for business travellers, but it is also a good choice for those who want to be well placed in the heart of the London (there are great transport links here across the rest of the city and plenty to see and do in the immediate vicinity). Equally, while there is naturally an excellent choice of five-star hotels housed here, some of the best hotels in the City of London are in fact quite affordable. Our hotel experts have hand-selected their favourites including charming boutiques, characterful pubs, grand luxury stays, and romantic boltholes. So why not browse through our collection to start planning your next city break?
For a boutique

- The Rookery is an intimate bolthole spread across three 18th-century houses. The rooms are full of character; expect fireplaces, roll-top baths and quality antiques, plus they offer breakfast in bed or in the garden.
- An offshoot of The Zetter Hotel (see below), The Zetter Townhouse is an intimate boutique hotel with just 13 rooms and some fairly special vintage decor. Eclectic and colourful, this is a romantic option with great facilities.
For luxury

- The Montcalm at the Brewery is a five-star hotel located close to the Barbican Centre. The decor is chic, but traditional, with simple colour schemes and great details. There’s a fine dining restaurant, and, even a pub. A British classic.
- Four Seasons Hotel London at 10 Trinity Square is set in a beautiful listed city building that has been given a superb makeover. Rooms and suites effortlessly blend contemporary and classic style and you'll find all the pampering you'd expect from a Four Seasons property, plus Michelin dining on-site.
For couples

- Opulently converted from an 18th-century townhouse, Batty Langley’s fits in perfectly with the Spitalfields vibe. Some of it is gloriously over the top, but some of the rooms and suites are just stunningly traditional — with bathrooms you might want to just live in, this is a romantic and fun stay.
For a traditional stay

- The Ned is set in the former Midland Bank building located right in the City of London. Boasting sumptuous rooms oozing classical style — with designs harking back to the 20s and 30s. With a wide range of cuisine, a rooftop bar and an indoor pool — all bases are covered in this luxury stay.
For the design
- The Andaz Liverpool Street was once an old railway hotel serving Liverpool Street Station but now is a stylish five-star with a dizzying choice of good bars and restaurants. The location is hard to top for getting around in London and the sleek modern Andaz design is on point.
For Great Value

- The Zetter Hotel is a super-stylish hotel in trendy Clerkenwell with rooms and coffees that hipsters can’t fault. It’s quiet at the weekend and the 59 rooms and suites are very reasonably priced. An easy city crashpad.
- CitizenM Tower of London is a budget stay just a stone's throw from the Tower of London. CitizenM's trademark offering includes rooms with stunning city views, 24-hour food, and funky interiors. An easy choice for both business and leisure travellers.
For foodies
- The South Place Hotel is a super trendy, cutting edge design hotel with 80 rooms and a Michelin starred, rooftop restaurant. Rooms and suites are very chic and also surprisingly well priced.
For a pub

- The One Tun is a boutique pub with rooms in trendy Farringdon. The spacious rooms are designed with a modern take on traditional pub style. Expect wood panelled walls and plush bed heads. Downstairs, the atmospheric pub serves British classics and a good range of ales. Ideal for that quintessential British stay.
- Fox & Anchor is another Farringdon option. Here the individually styled rooms are moody and chic with dark hues, free-standing baths and large artworks. The restaurant serves up hearty gastro pub fare alongside a choice selection of beers, ales, and ciders.
