About Haarlem

Just 15 minutes west of Amsterdam by train, Haarlem is a fascinating destination in its own right. A medieval trading town with impressive Golden Age architecture lining cobblestone streets and squares, it will dazzle heritage and culture aficionados, as well as delighting romantics. The best places to stay in Haarlem are wide-ranging, with our picks including boutique boltholes and self-catering apartments in converted red-brick residences close to the heart of the old town.

The magnificent Grote Kerk commands Haarlem’s central market square, and is the ideal starting point for a ramble along the city’s winding lanes. Admire gabled houses with flower-filled window boxes, cycle alongside peaceful canals, and pop into independent shops and cafés as you wander. Admire a rare collection of books and artefacts at the Teylers Museum — the oldest in the Netherlands — or delve into the history of the city at Museum Haarlem. The Frans Hals Museum’s vast array of artwork is exceptional, and conveniently located near the Archaeological Museum, which details an incredible 6,000 years of history.

Keen shoppers, on the other hand, need look no further than the pedestrianised Grote Houtstraat and surrounding lanes, whilst fans of great beer can tour to unusual Jopen brewery, housed in a former church. Venture further afield to stroll around the gorgeous Keukenhof Gardens, or to follow scenic cycling and hiking trails through the countryside and towards the coast. Return to one of the best places to stay in Haarlem for an evening tipple before a night out on the town.

The Best Places to Stay in Haarlem

For an intimate bolthole

  • Hotel Bleeker has just 11 rooms set behind a red brick façade. Whitewashed rooms are spacious and modern, with cosy beds, clean lines and a minimalist feel. A relaxed little hotel in Bloemendaal.
  • Hotel t'Vosje, a beautiful 19th century building turned pint-sized hotel, has just four generous guest rooms, each individually decorated. Three of the rooms open onto sunlit terraces, perfect for an evening drink or two. Very charming.
  • Staats has a more contemporary vibe, with 21 design-led spaces fusing period touches with lots of glass, statement furnishings and eclectic details. The lounge and gardens are lovely, as are the European dishes with a Dutch twist.
  • Haarlem Hotel Suites offers a mid-century modern sense of cool in vast, apartment-style spaces. Think sitting rooms and some kitchenettes, plus easy access to nearby eateries and bars. Many of the 12 rooms have big terraces, and families are welcome in larger spaces.

For foodies

  • Frenchie is first and foremost a fabulous little restaurant. Specialising in traditional dishes including Dutch pancakes or champagne and locally sourced oysters, this is an enormously popular spot with Haarlem residents. The five stylish guest rooms feature exposed wooden beams, herringbone floors and a muted palette of soft greys, cream and dusky pink. Book your table in advance.

For romantic luxury

  • MAF Haarlem Boutique Hotel offers 14 romantic guest rooms with exposed beams, warm painted walls and well-chosen antiques. The chandeliers and velvet upholstery add to the sense of opulence, and moreish snacks and drinks are served in the Grand Café. A luxurious choice.
  • Brass Hotel Suites is another couples' favourite, set just steps from Grote Markt. The 14 individually appointed guest rooms have unusual colour palettes, some with chequered marble floors and rain showers or big whirlpool tubs. Romantic and characterful, whilst also feeling fresh and modern.
