A northern Spanish region famed for its rich red wines, La Rioja is a brilliant destination for keen foodies. It’s also on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, and hikers from across the world follow age-old paths through the region’s red earth each year. Set under dazzling blue skies, La Rioja’s picturesque villages, towns and cities are also home to a burgeoning number of charming accommodation options, many of which are converted mansions or monasteries. Whether you’re dreaming of the ultimate wine country holiday or trekking to Santiago de Compostela, the best places to stay in La Rioja await.
Logroño, the region’s capital, is a gastronomic hotspot, with countless bars and eateries specialising in fabulous tapas — accompanied, of course, by wonderful wine. Particular cultural highlights include the impressive Co-cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda, and the fascinating Museo de la Rioja. Don’t miss ambling along the Ebro River, or taking a scenic boat trip. For an insight into Spain’s ancient traditions of pilgrimage, walk part of the Camino route or head to the well-known Cathedral de Santo Domingo de la Calzada, 45 minutes west of Logroño.
Most travellers, however, will be drawn to La Rioja by its world-class wineries. Centred around the vast plains of the Ebro Valley, the region has three wine-producing micro-climates. The northern Rioja Alavesa and the Rioja Alta are both planted with Tempranillo vines; the latter are left to mature for longer, creating a spicier flavour. The Rioja Baja, on the other hand, is dominated by Garnacha grapes, producing the darker wines which come to mind for more international drinkers of Rioja. Enjoy tours and tastings at large wineries and tiny family-owned bodegas, cycling or walking between them. Many are within easy reach of the best places to stay in La Rioja — some of which also have their own vineyards.
