About Cherbourg

At the tip of Normandy’s Contentin Peninusla, Cherbourg is a bustling port city on a dramatic stretch of scenic coastline. Most visitors arrive by cruise liner or ferry, and many spend just one night in Cherbourg. Considering the growing selection of great accommodation options, cultural attractions and fabulous seafood on offer, however, we’d suggest extending your trip to gain a real sense of the city and surrounding countryside. The best places to stay in Cherbourg include simple, self-catering spots and gorgeous châteaux, perfect for a blissful French escape.

History buffs will delight in strolling around the old town, lined with pretty shopfronts, hotels and eateries. The Musée de la Libération details Cherbourg’s role in the Second World War, when it was a key strategic target after the D-Day Landings. The views from the museum, on the Montagne du Roule, are stunning, and the Fort de Roule is also well worth visiting. Culture aficionados should also pop into the Musée Thomas-Henry, home to an impressive art collection, and the quirky Manufacture Le Parapluie de Cherbourg. The city's farmers' and fish markets are excellent.

Little ones will adore the brilliant Cité de la Mer, one of Europe’s best aquariums, whilst outdoorsy travellers of all ages can enjoy cycling, hiking, horse riding, swimming, fishing and sailing nearby. Do take the time to see Cherbourg’s historic docks, too — this was one of the final places where the Titanic stopped — and it’s now a lively working port, catering to travellers from across the globe. Wherever you’ve journeyed from, you’ll find a warm welcome at the best places to stay in Cherbourg!
