Undoubtedly one of Ireland’s most famous places, County Limerick is surprisingly off-the-beaten-track as a holiday destination — making it an even more appealing base for experiencing Ireland’s scenic countryside, lively city life and picturesque villages. Accommodation options are varied, with cosy B&Bs and chic luxury hotels catering to a range of tastes and budgets. Many of the best places to stay in County Limerick are country house hotels with excellent farm-to-table cuisine, but we also have a selection of favourites in the city itself, perfect for soaking up its history, architecture and fun foodie scene.
Known for its friendly feel and attractive blend of medieval and Georgian architecture, Limerick makes for a wonderful city break destination. Stroll from King John’s Castle to St Mary’s Cathedral, immerse yourself in the bustle of the Potato Market and the Milk Market, and check out the impressive collections at The Hunt Museum and the Limerick City Gallery of Art. With a buzzing events scene, thrumming riverside restaurants and quirky bars, this is a funky, fascinating place to base yourself for a few days.
Part of Limerick’s appeal, of course, lies in its proximity to the verdant farmland of rural County Limerick. Perched on the Shannon Estuary, the region is framed by rising mountains to the south and east, and dotted with heritage attractions. Head to Lough Gur for atmospheric archaeological sites, including the 4,000-year-old Grange Stone Circle, and discover the area’s ancient past at the Heritage Centre. The 13th-century ruins of Kilmallock Abbey are well worth seeing, too, as is the local heritage trail from Kilmallock Museum.
Southwest of Limerick sits Adare, a pretty thatched village boasting the ruined Adare Castle, a Norman fortress destroyed by Cromwell’s troops in 1657, as well as a crumbling Franciscan Friary. Interestingly, the Friary rests at the heart of Adare Golf Club, although it is open to visitors. An unusual setting for a round or two of golf! As well as some good golf, County Limerick offers wonderful walking routes and hiking paths, horse riding opportunities and the chance to catch some brilliant rugby at Thomond Park Stadium.
If it’s fabulous food that you’re after, look to Limerick itself, where there are delectable eateries to try, as well as to the indulgent country house hotels in the Adare area. The focus on local, seasonal ingredients and homegrown produce means that you can expect an ever-changing array of delights to sample and savour. Many of the best places to stay in County Limerick pride themselves on their restaurants, as well as their stylish decor and abundant heritage charm. Whether you’re on the hunt for a cool city break or a restful rural escape, County Limerick has it all!
