Alberobello is a really unique looking part of Puglia, made famous and popular by its UNESCO heritage listing, which is due to its numbers of trulli — the whitewashed, conical-roofed traditional homes of the area. What will make staying in Alberobello even more memorable is opting for a trulli of your own, which is surprisingly easy to do. Originally all the homes in Alberobello were trulli, designed and built this way to dodge taxes, which the locals managed to do by dismantling their trulli very quickly, and pretending the town wasn’t permanently inhabited. In addition to admiring the trulli, Alberobello has a number of museums — including the stunning Museo del Territorio, which is made of ten trulli — and plenty of local produce to taste test. The two most picturesque parts of Alberobello to explore are Rione Monti, and the Aia Piccola.

Alberobello is a fairly peaceful place, and after your day’s explorations head towards the town centre for the typical Italian pizzerias, bars and restaurants, or visit one of the trulli trattoria. If it’s a Thursday there’s a huge foodie market. • Trulli e Puglia, is a collection of UNESCO heritage listed trulli, in the centre of town. The trulli feature the stone walls, beamed ceilings, and tiled floors that typify them — although with some comfort-creating updates too, like the cafe, bar and restaurant. These 12 rooms and suites are versatile enough to be combined so that they can sleep up to eight, making them a great choice for families — especially the suites, which also have kitchenettes.

• The B&B Fascino Antico also offers trulli accommodation, in four charming rooms, all of which sleep four. These trulli also have the classic conical roofs, with domed ceilings, and exposed stone details. The trulli are arranged around a very pleasant courtyard, beyond which there’s a pool and gardens. There’s no restaurant, but they do serve breakfast; three of the four rooms have kitchenettes, and there’s a shared barbecue on the terrace. Friendly, welcoming, and great for families too.

Travel Information

• Brindisi Airport is the closest airport to Alberobello, about 42 miles, or just shy of an hours drive away, or about an hour and a half by train. Bari Airport is almost equidistant, at 47 miles away, which is almost exactly an hour away by car, but two and a half hours away by public transport.
• If you plan to hire a car, which we would advise if you want to get out and explore further afield, we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
• Alberobello‘s Mediterranean climate, and proximity to the temperature regulating sea, means there’s not really a bad time to visit as far as the weather is concerned. It’s hot in summer, but only really hot – 30°C+ – in July and August, which are also the months Italian visitors opt for. While it does rain in winter, it’s not so much as to put off visitors, because Italy is wonderful to visit during the Christmas season, it’s not very cold, and it's beautifully lit up with festive decorations. If you visit between December and February you’ll also be here for the Carnevale di Putigano, which is the world’s longest festival, running from Boxing Day until Shrove Tuesday. Spring and autumn are more temperate, with temperatures in the 20°Cs – perfect conditions for walkers and cyclists. April and May, and September and October are quieter, as far as visitor numbers goes, and accommodation tends to be much better value.
