About Forte dei Marmi

Forte dei Marmi is one of the great success stories of travel, people have been visiting this spectacularly beautiful spot since the beginning of the 18th century, when it became popular to breathe sea air and spend time in the sea and the sun. So some of the best places to stay in Forte dei Marmi have been hosting guests for hundreds of years, and they really know what they’re doing! Forte dei Marmi’s accommodation options include some seriously grand old seafront hotels, beautiful historic palazzos, as well as some more contemporary-style resorts.

If you like your accommodation historic, then you’ll find hotels converted from the former holiday homes of some of Europe’s wealthiest families. These are often set back from the waterfront, in the cooler hills, and are probably the best option if you want to explore a bit further than just the sun, sea and sand of the Mediterranean!

Forte dei Marmi is certainly a swanky place, full of A-listers. Its streets are crammed with big name designer boutiques, and there's a slew of great restaurants, several with Michelin stars, where you can sit and watch the beautiful people go by! But really what it's all about is its glorious stretch of clean sandy beach which extends to some seven miles — the tricky bit is deciding which exclusive beach club you want to go to...

Don't forget that if you're planning your visit in the peak summer months, the best places to stay in Forte dei Marmi will be very busy (and you can expect to pay top dollar for your room). So do your homework and book well ahead.

The Best Places to Stay in Forte dei Marmi

For Beach-side Luxury

  • The Grand Hotel Imperiale is a luxury beach hotel of a very Italian style, with graceful pillars, draped curtains, ornate lamps, antiques with narrow legs, and high ceilings. Of the 46 rooms and suites our favourites are those with sea view balconies, but all of the rooms are equally sophisticated. The Grand Hotel has three restaurants, and can offer everything from beach-side dining to gourmet Tuscan cuisine. It also has a spa and wellness centre, a private beach, and, you might be surprised to hear, fantastic facilities for kids, including a kids club.
  • The Hotel Byron is a five star hotel in a wonderful spot on the coast just outside Forte dei Marmi. Its 29 rooms and suites are unfussily contemporary, in a grey palette with accents in brighter colours. One of its four restaurants has a Michelin star, another spills out onto the pool terrace, where you can enjoy candle lit suppers by the water. The grounds are lush, the spa facilities excellent, and it’s moments from the beach.

For Romance

  • The Albergo Pietrasanta is a stylishly converted 17th century palazzo, complete with delicate frescoes, intricate plasterwork, huge windows and elegantly carved stone fireplaces. Its 20 rooms and suites are all individually decorated, but you can expect beautiful herringbone parquet, grand beds, antiques, and the owner’s collection of contemporary art. The palazzo’s leafy courtyard is the perfect place for an aperitif, and you’re moments from a number of excellent places to eat and drink, and the beach.
  • The Palazzo Guiscardo is a beautiful Art Nouveau building turned ten room luxury hotel, with plenty of striped wallpaper, grand beds with drapes, contemporary art, and Carrara marble bathrooms with whirlpool tubs. The reception is decorated in a contrastingly contemporary style. No restaurant, but there are numerous places to eat and drink nearby.

For a Special Occasion

  • The Principe Forte dei Marmi is a luxurious beach-front hotel, with a graceful, classical facade that sits just behind its own private beach club. The Principe has 15 rooms and 13 suites, all beautifully decked out in contemporary luxury, done in muted neutral tones. The suites have private balconies too, and are large enough for families. There’s also a fully equipped spa and gym, watersports facilities at the private beach club, and an absolutely fantastic seafood restaurant. All the bells and whistles.

Travel Information

  • Forte dei Marmi’s closest airport is Pisa Airport, which is about 29 miles away — about half an hour in the car or a taxi, or almost two hours on public transport.
  • If you're looking to hire a car, we recommend visiting our online partner Rentalcars.
  • Right on the Tyrrhenian Sea, which opens onto the Mediterranean, Forte dei Marmi has the Mediterranean hot, dry summers and mild winters. If you’re here for the summer weather expect maximum temperatures around 30°C and minimum temperatures of 20°C plus plenty of sunshine. It’s quieter during the other seasons, and some of the hotels still close in the off-season, opening just before Easter — which is busy and colourful.
