About Gubbio

Gubbio is the oldest town in Umbria. One of our Gurus calls it a living museum, waxing lyrical over the way its Gothic and Renaissance architecture marks out the skyline so magnificently. As with many of Umbria’s hilltop towns Gubbio has limited accommodation options within its walls: the best places to stay in Gubbio include a converted monastery, a converted farmhouse, and a villa-turned-hotel (all of historic Gubbio’s accommodation has been converted from something).

It’s not just Gubbio’s architecture our Gurus are comparing to a museum, it’s also the way traditions live on — the town is constantly bubbling over wth one festival or market or another. Definitely consider the calendar when you’re booking one of the best places to stay in Gubbio!

If you’re interested in the history of Gubbio you might want to visit Gubbio during the summer months, when the Roman amphitheatre hosts performances. Our foodie Gurus are big fans of Gubbio too, rating the truffle sauce and fried bread with bacon, sausage, onion and rosemary, so they recommend foodies look at the calendar of produce before they make their final decision on where to stay and when.

If there’s no availability in one of the best places to stay in Gubbio, you could consider some options just outside the walls. The Torre di Moravola, Castello di Petroia, or Borgo di Carpiano possibly are all a short drive out of town.

Within Historic Gubbio

  • Welcoming and romantic, Relais Ducale is a charming city-centre hotel, ideal for local exploring because it’s within walking distance of a slew of major local sights. The thirty rooms are rustic, with exposed stone walls and wooden floors; the bar is elegant; and the sun terrace provides spectacular views. It's great value too.
  • The Park Hotel ai Cappuccini is a converted, 17th century monastery, complete with a state-of-the-art spa and almost futuristically styled indoor pool. Aside from the watery designs, the 92 rooms and suites are classically decorated, making the most of the monastery’s beautiful vaulted stone ceilings and vast fireplaces. There are some lovely paintings and tapestries, especially in the restaurant and the public areas, which reference the building’s original purpose. The views over gardens are sublime.

For a Rural Retreat

  • Nikis Resort is a beautifully converted stone farmhouse, with bags of rustic charm and exceptional views from its hilltop location, just above Gubbio. Nikis has just 20 rustic chic rooms and apartment suites, all with terracotta tiled floors and exposed beams. The restaurant shares the same charming decor, and has an air of elegance and a window in the floor down to the wine cellar. The array of spa facilities, and the two pools with views make this a proper hideaway resort.

  • Fly into Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi International Airport, which is 39km from Gubbio.
  • If you want to rent a car, contact our partner Rentalcars.
  • While Gubbio has numerous festivals and events throughout the year, the best times to visit are probably during the pleasant summer months when remains of the Roman theatre on the outskirts of the town host performances, and temperatures range between 16 to 29° C, or right after the winter, in February or March. Easter and Christmas are understandably very popular times as well, and there are all sorts of fascinating celebrations around both.
