About Latina

After Rome, Latina is the second largest city in the Lazio region of central Italy. It’s about an hour from Rome, south, towards the Mediterranean. The city is an industrial centre, with a big agricultural focus, and great markets, but it’s not a particularly appealing city for visitors to Italy, especially not when you’re so close to Rome. But Latina’s beautiful, Mediterranean coastline really benefits from being so close to the capital, offering a seaside escape from the hard-core cultural sightseeing. So we see the best places to stay in Latina as the perfect short escapes, favouring hotels right on the water — the sort you don’t need, or want, to leave. Our list of recommendations for Latina includes both old and new hotels of this ilk, large and small, purpose-built and villa conversions.

Just off Latina’s coast is an archipelago of rocky islands, called the Pontine Islands. Some of these islands are inhabited, and some just have a sprinkling of buildings, usually including a cafe/ bar/ restaurant, and these islands offer another outdoor escape, ideal for a day out on the sea, and a spot of sunbathing or snorkelling.

The best places to stay in Latina offer a great contrast to the frenetic atmosphere of Rome at its busiest. So it's a really good add-on for anyone looking for the best of all worlds in their Italian holiday: get the sightseeing done, then crash on the beach!

The Best Places to Stay in Latina

For Ocean Views

  • Il Fogliano is a stunning, contemporary hotel with an elegant minimalism the makes the most of its spectacular location almost amongst the sand dunes of the Cicero National Park. There are only 19 rooms and suites, though it feels large enough to accommodate more, with simple decor that uses plenty of white and makes the most of the views again — both of the dunes and the Mediterranean. The atmosphere is relaxed, and this is definitely the sort of place one would come to escape, complete with an impressive spa and hydromassage pools, plus a restaurant with spectacular view, a gorgeous terrace area, and of course the beach.

For a Beach Escape

  • The Hotel Punta Rossa is a charming hotel, situated right on the rocky shore of the Mediterranean, and surrounded by lush botanical gardens. Our favourites of the 42 rooms and suites have wonderful sea views, as well as plenty of space and simple, traditional decor. The suites are in separate villas, like a little fishermen’s village, with private balconies and all the mod cons. There are two pools, one on a terrace with a ladder to the private beach and the sea. The restaurant spills out onto another terrace, also overlooking the water, and serves seafood, and an excellent local menu. And the spa offers thalassotherapy treatments. Some of the suites are a good size for families.

Travel Information

  • The closest international airports to Latina are Rome’s: Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino, and Ciampino Airport, which is used primarily by the low cost carriers. From Fiumicino, Latina is about an hour away by road, or almost three hours by train. From Ciampino, it’s about 50 minutes' drive, or about three hours on public transport.
  • If you plan to hire a car, which we would advise if you want to get out and explore further afield, we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars. From Rome the drive takes around an hour also.
  • If you’re planning a trip to the coast of the Latina region then you’re probably looking at visiting between May and October to get the best weather, and to ensure that everything is open. The Mediterranean climate means the summer here get pretty hot, and the winters are quite mild, though damp, so the period for optimum weather stretches out beyond the edges of the summer months, until it starts getting quite rainy in October, and very rainy in November. Summer is always the busiest time for international visitors, and prices will be friendlier outside of these windows.
