About Hiroshima
Founded in 1589 as a castle town on the Ota River delta, Hiroshima grew as an industrial hub and centre of military activity. Its existence was seared on the global consciousness in August 1945, with the Allies’ devastating dropping of the atomic bomb as an effort to end WWII. Although the city centre was destroyed, tremendous efforts have been made to rebuild, and Hiroshima now stands as a fascinating modern city and a testament to the endurance of the human spirit. It’s a very special destination, and the best places to stay in Hiroshima reflect the city’s 21st-century commercial importance as well as its history.
Guided walking tours offer a unique chance to get to grips with the city centre and the legacy of the Second World War. Hiroshima-jo, the city's feudal castle, has been beautifully reconstructed, as have heritage sites such as the formal Shukkei-en Gardens. The Peace Memorial Park and Museum, near the heart of the city, are dominated by the haunting Atom Bomb Dome. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is a must-visit, as are the Children's Peace Monument and the Peace Bell. The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art is also excellent.
Venture further afield to Miyajima, a short ferry ride away, for hikes and heritage sites. Return to one of the best places to stay in Hiroshima to feast on delicious Japanese and international cuisine.
