About Ilha do Pico

Rising dramatically from the Atlantic Ocean, Ilha do Pico is dominated by Mount Pico, Portugal's highest peak — which has become an icon of the Azores archipelago. Many of the best places to stay on Ilha do Pico are set within the historic whaling towns of Lajes do Pico and Madalena, where traditional basalt stone houses reflect the island's maritime heritage whilst offering an ideal springboard for keen explorers.

The island's UNESCO World Heritage-listed vineyard culture sets it apart, with thousands of small, rectangular plots known as currais carved from black volcanic rock. Tours and tastings at these ancient vineyards, which still produce distinctive wines, are fascinating. Venture further afield to hike up Mount Pico, discovering lava caves, or take to sea to spot migratory whales.

Don’t miss ambling around the charming village of São Roque do Pico, home to the Whaling Industry Museum. Take refreshing dips in natural pools carved from molten lava, sample local seafood specialities paired with homegrown wines, and kick back at the best place to stay on Ilha do Pico — a laid-back gem with an atmosphere much like the island itself.
