About Vidago

Vidago is a small town in the northern Portuguese district of Vila Real very close to the Spanish border, and long famed for its mineral waters. The best places to stay in Vidago are an ideal base for enjoying all that the town and surrounding area have to offer.

Originally Vidago became a popular destination in the late 19th century. It was visited by King Luis in 1875 and 1877 and was a retreat for Portugal’s rich and famous who came to enjoy the spa and other facilities that had grown up around it. The quality of the mineral waters and their restorative properties found worldwide renown. It was not until 1907, when the railway arrived that the town saw any significant development. The new line from Porto sparked renewed interest and development, making Vidago accessible to many more travellers.

This is the very heart of Portugal’s celebrated wine country and there is much to see and do locally.
