About Gyeongju

South Korea’s most historic city, Gyeongju was once the capital of the legendary Silla Kingdom. Set in the country’s southeastern corner, it’s a brilliant destination for cultural and heritage aficionados, who will delight in spending a few days exploring colourful ancient sites. Accommodation options are wide-ranging, with the best places to stay in Gyeongju including family-friendly lakeside hotels as well as a soothing boutique bolthole with a sensational spa.

Often dubbed ‘a museum without walls’, Gyeongju is choc-a-bloc with fascinating historic landmarks. Take a guided tour of the narrow lanes of the old town centre, or to the brightly painted Bulguksa Temple, a well-preserved site of worship. Expect to discover stone pagodas, royal tombs and a striking observatory tower in town. Natural wonders — also UNESCO-recognised — include Seokguram Grotto and Namsan Mountain. You will appreciate dazzling views from atop the mountain, which is also studded with heritage relics.

Just outside of the city is spectacular Lake Bomun. You’ll find many of the best places to stay in Gyonegju clustered around the lake, which has a popular walking and cycling trail. Admire delicate cherry blossoms in spring, take scenic boat trips out on the water, or embark upon all manner of fun activities with the whole family. This part of Korea is also known for its terrific regional cuisine — don’t miss savouring flavoursome fare at family-owned eateries aplenty!
