Crediton is a very historic market town, known for being the birthplace of St. Boniface — who went on to become the patron saint of Germany and The Netherlands. The town's present-day appeals include its location, surrounded by some of the most scenic of Devon’s hills and valleys, just seven miles from Dartmoor National Park, and about 45 minutes drive from Exmoor. Before the Normans arrived, Crediton was one of the largest towns in the area, and seat of the Bishops of Devon. It still has a wonderful parish church cum cathedral, an architecturally sublime offering in red-sandstone. Crediton went on to become more of a commercial centre, known for its wool, cloth, and dairy products. It is still a thriving destination, though now it’s all bijou galleries and boutiques, cafes and independent bookshops. You'll also find a number of excellent pubs.

• If you’re planning to travel to Crediton by air, the closest airport is Exeter International Airport, which is about half an hour away by car or taxi. Bristol Airport has a longer list of connections, and is about an hour and a half away by car, or about two and a half hours away by public transport, and if you’re travelling from one of London’s airports, or via London at all, the best option is the train from Paddington.
