About Glencoe

Carved by glaciers and volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago, Glencoe is steeped in myth, history and romance. A beautiful region characterised by a deep valley surrounded by mountains which loom high into the sky, Glencoe's wild landscapes have long inspired storytellers and artists. Part of the Lochaber Geopark in Argyll, it’s also a hugely popular destination for outdoorsy adventurers, with many of the best places to stay in Glencoe offering brilliant access to great hiking, mountain biking and climbing.

Keen explorers can kayak across Loch Leven, cross the bleak expanse of Rannoch Moor, clamber up towering Buachaille Etive Mòr, or tackle the Devil's Stair. The waterfalls at Onich are dazzling, and there’s some great golf to be had at Ballachulish. Winter visitors, on the other hand, can climb ice walls at Kinlochleven or hit the slopes of the Glencoe Mountain Resort. This is a tremendous choice for a fun-filled trip with friends and family.

Glencoe’s history is also well worth discovering. The infamous 1692 massacre, in which members of Clan MacDonald were betrayed and killed by the Campbells, has been extensively commemorated in Highland myth; as has the tale of the warrior hero Fingal, who grew up in Glencoe. Delve into these intriguing tales as you discover this stunning part of Scotland — and book your trip well in advance, as the best places to stay in Glencoe fill up fast!
