The southernmost of Georgia’s Sea Islands, Jekyll Island was once the private winter retreat of America's wealthiest industrialists. Now easily accessible and brimming with things to see and do, this 5,500-acre island is a gorgeous destination for a fun-filled trip as a family, couple or group of friends. Accommodation options range from self-catering cottages to chic beach hotels fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets. Many of the best places to stay on Jekyll Island are right on the coast — perfect for spellbinding sea views and sandy strolls.
Originally home to Native American communities and later owned by the DuBignon family, Jekyll Island was purchased in 1886 by a group of the USA’s most affluent families. The Jekyll Island Club, as it came to be known, included the Morgans, Vanderbilts, Rockefellers and Astors, amongst others. Many of the members' opulent residences have been preserved in the island’s National Historic Landmark District, which is a fascinating place for an architecture and heritage tour. The ruins of 18th-century Horton House also make for an intriguing visit.
Beyond its imposing historic homes, Jekyll Island boasts nine miles of superb beaches, including Driftwood Beach and St Andrews Beach — a great place to spot dolphins. Head to the Georgia Sea Turtle Centre to learn about rehabilitation efforts, meander along 20 miles of cycling trails, take guided nature and birding tours amongst the salt marches, or go horse riding on the beach. There are also multiple golf courses on the island, as well as opportunities to play tennis, or to go sailing, fishing and kayaking. Since its purchase in 1947 by the State of Georgia, considerable efforts have been made to preserve Jekyll Island’s beauty, and this is a very special place for lovers of the great outdoors.
This destination retains a lovely, laid-back feel, but the best places to stay on Jekyll Island can fill up fast during the summer months. Book your stay well in advance to avoid missing out!
