Once best known for its spring break parties, St. Petersburg has been reimagined as an artsy, sophisticated city, with a burgeoning foodie and culture-focused community. This is reflected in the city’s appealing accommodation options, too, which range from intimate B&Bs to family-friendly resorts, fit for an array of tastes and budgets. Whilst many of the best places to stay in St Pete’s are right on the beach, one of our favourite hideaways is nestled in a historic neighbourhood: perfect for exploring.
The big highlights are the city’s impressive galleries — the Salvador Dalí Museum, Chihuly Collection and St Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts amongst them. Look out for exciting events at the Morean Arts Centre, check out live music evenings at venues across town, and tap into the growing crop of craft beer bars and farm-to-table eateries for buzzing evenings out. The heritage buildings of the rejuvenated downtown area and the fun farmers’ markets are a wonderful reward for taking the time to discover the city on foot. John’s Pass Village, once a small pirate haven, also promises waterfront entertainment and some great restaurants.
If you’re dreaming of Florida sun, sea and sand, base yourself close to St Pete’s Beach, where you can expect lazy beach days, as well as ample opportunities to go sailing, kayaking or fishing. Outdoorsy types will especially enjoy hiking or paddling in the nearby Weedon Island Preserve. There’s golf, cycling and tennis in the area too, and Tampa’s many highlights — including the Florida Aquarium — are just a short drive away.
The best places to stay in St Petersburg fill up fast during the summer months and the week of the popular St Pete Grand Prix. Book your room well in advance to avoid missing out!
