Burgundy sits in the plump heart of France, a varied countryside threaded with rivers, patched with woods and vineyards, and peppered with castles and abbeys. Rich is the word. But while the food and drink are worthy of a king’s table, your accommodation choices don’t have to cost you a king’s ransom: there's plenty of fantastic accommodation on our Guru's list of the best B&Bs in Burgundy. If you're looking for this type of property, it's a question of avoiding insipid tourist hotels and discovering the individual, homely and one-of-a-kind places that match the restaurants and the famous wines in character and local colour. Because, like some of the best restaurants in Burgundy, some of the best B&Bs in Burgundy are the unknown gems.

For a Country Escape

La Ferme de Marie Eugenie

  • La Ferme de Marie-Eugenie is a traditional, 18th century farmhouse surrounded by beautiful gardens. Inside the four guest rooms are decorated in a style that blends the traditional building with contemporary trends for simplicity and pale grey colour schemes. The cosy lounge is welcoming, and the gardens and terraces have many lovely places to sit. Large breakfasts are served, and every evening there’s a table d’hote supper served.
  • Le Moulin des Templiers just outside Avallon is a charming guesthouse in an idyllic spot by the river, with a great dining room in which to enjoy the local bounty. The 15 bedrooms are modern and simple and there's a fabulous outdoor hot tub and riverside sauna.
  • Le Logis d'Aze is a large, stone country house set amongst vineyards to the north of Macon, with four B&B guest rooms. The accommodation is spacious and simply decorated, with wonderful original beamed ceilings, wooden floors and the odd exposed stone wall. Perfect for a rural escape, and for walkers.

For Seeing the Sights

Les Chambres de LImprimerie

  • Les Chambres de L'Imprimerie is one of the most contemporary feeling B&Bs on our list, it’s in Beaune, but converted from an old printing factory, so there’s an industrial edge to the old building. There are five rooms, all large, and decorated in grey-scale colours, plus a lounge and dining room. This is a stylish, comfortable stay in a great location; it’s good for families and groups too.
  • Cote Rempart is set just beside the ramparts of Beaune. Despite the rustic exterior the five rooms are very elegant — our favourites sit under the arched beams of the roof — and all feel very French, but unfussy with it. Breakfasts are sumptuous, and there are lots of sights within walking distance, plus many restaurants, bars and cafés too.

For Romance

Le Petit Manoir des Bruyeres

  • Le Petit Manoir des Bruyeres is a country house to the west of Auxerre, that looks like something from a fairytale, with an intricately patterned tiled roof and big shutters on the windows. Inside is no less special, with beamed ceilings, tapestries, original fireplaces and an impressive collection of antiques which look like they really belong here. Through the large windows are rural views and there’s a table d’hote supper served nightly.
  • One of the best B&Bs in Burgundy for romantics is La Cour Berbisey in Dijon. This is a smart townhouse B&B with a great spa and a sophisticated vibe. The four suites are enormous, and the five rooms are a decent size too.

For a Château Stay

Chateau de Villette

  • Château de Villette is a charming, 18th century château set on a vast 500 hectare parkland estate. The five elegant rooms are furnished with romantic decor in typically French style. Downstairs, the fires roar in a grand living room and guests can organise in advance to dine with their hosts in the château's atmospheric dining room.

For Rural Views

Vers La Croix

  • Vers La Croix is a villa-like country house in a picturesquely rural spot, with four B&B guest rooms, and an inviting outdoor pool with a view. The rooms are beautifully simple, with white walls and linens, beamed ceilings, wooden floors, unfussy furniture and contemporary art. Some of the bathrooms have free standing tubs and intricate tile work. The terrace, courtyards and gardens are idyllic places to rest of a summer evening.

For Vineyard Views

Chateau de Pierreclos

  • The Château de Pierreclos is s striking, historic building set within the grounds of a working vineyard. All around the château are manicured gardens, but you can see the grapes beyond them. Inside, the rooms have been carefully styled to flatter the building’s original features, but still feel contemporary. There’s a selection of configurations including elegant, spacious suites on the lower levels, and rooms with two single beds, tiled floors and exposed beams on the higher floors. There’s also a pool.
  • Clos Saint Jacques is a four room B&B carefully converted from an 18th century winery, and still surrounded by vine rows and vineyard views around the village of Meursault. The rooms are spacious, with simple, tasteful details, art and antiques, and pale walls and linens. There’s no restaurant, but you’re really surrounded by fantastic places to eat and drink here.

For Foodies

Les Jardins de Lois

  • Les Jardins de Lois in Beaune, is a four room, wine themed B&B with elegant rural chic decor in warm pastels, and a lovely large garden. There’s a wine cellar, of course, and a charming breakfast room. You’re surrounded by places to eat and drink here (there are two Michelin starred restaurants in Beaune and 12 others that come Michelin recommended!), and the owners of the B&B are experts in the region’s wines.

For Families

La Cimentelle

  • La Cimentelle is a stately country house turned nine room guesthouse B&B, with beautiful rural views and a heated outdoor pool. La Cimentelle is a great pick for groups because of its size, and because it has a guest cottage on the property with self catering facilities. Each of the rooms in the main house has its own style, art and antique collection, and they all have smart ensuite bathrooms. Situated just north of Avallon.
  • Douce Nuits is an elegant, five room B&B in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges. The rooms are confidently decorated with Klein blue feature walls and bold grey-scale fabrics. There’s also a two bedroom apartment, which is ideal for small families. Breakfast is served in a courtyard full of palms, and there’s a tasting room and wine cellar in the basement.

For Great Value

Carpe Diem

  • Set in beautiful, mature gardens, Carpe Diem is a quaint, stone country house turned five room B&B. Each room has been individually dressed and decorated using very French-feeling choices, like toile du jouy fabrics and elegant antiques. The breakfasts are impressive and table d’hote suppers are served six days a week.
  • La Passerelle des Cortons is a charming, three room B&B in a small village surrounded by vineyards, but just outside Beaune. The rooms are cosy and simply dressed, with traditional details and roll top baths. Breakfast is offered on the terrace which overlooks a neighbouring vineyard.
