Armenistis, on the north coast of Ikaria, was a well kept secret until the 1990s, but the cat is out of the bag now. The Cavos Bay was the first proper hotel in this tiny, funky village and, although it now has competition, it still has an unbeatable location and offers excellent value for money. The rooms are plain but well-equipped; most with sea-facing terraces. A huge beach of coarse sand is just 10 minutes walk away. No à la carte restaurant, but the village has plenty of cafés, bars and tavernas.
