Walk through the rotating doors, up the marble steps and you’ll be greeted by the warm buzz of activity and enjoyment. It’s not hard to see why Claridge's remains the go-to hotel for those looking for something special when they stay in London. There’s nothing staid or stuffy here. Sure the staff are keen to please (that’s what they’re there for after all), but there’s nothing obsequious, just good old fashioned service. The lobby is a joy just to stand and marvel at if you’ve never been inside the building – black and white chequered marble floor, sweeping staircase and more period Art Deco features than you can shake a stick at. It is simply stunning, a piece of timeless elegance which will bring a smile to your face. There is a manned lift, complete with sofa, to whisk you up to your spacious room or suite where you’ll find yet more glorious art deco design, though no two will be the same. The furniture has been carefully chosen to reflect the theme with chrome light fittings, wooden headboards and divine chests of drawers with wooden inlays; even the carpets complement the style. Bathrooms are marble with deep roll top tubs and walk in showers, plus complimentary toiletries made by Cowshed for Claridge's (delicately scented soap with a distinct whiff of days gone by), and monogrammed towels. But Claridge's is not just about a bed for the night….there’s plenty here to delight before you think about going upstairs. There are two bars, both full of atmosphere, but one for more quiet evenings (the fumoir which used to be where the men disappeared for their cigars) and the livelier Claridge's Bar (be warned – you may have to wait for a table!). Then there’s where to dine. Epicureans will want to head to the Michelin starred Fera at Claridges – it’s all about the finest seasonal ingredients which aim to capture the essence of nature. The other option is the Reading Room where the emphasis is on more relaxed fine dining, but equally as delicious. As you’d expect the wine list is exceptional too and the decanters in the Reading Room wouldn’t look out of place in a smart gallery. Afternoon tea is quite simply an institution here, and if you’ve got the time it is an absolute must. For a special occasion, or indeed a room in one of London’s best locations, Claridge's can not be beaten. It is an iconic grande dame, which just seems to get better with age, and it’s not hard to see why this place is beloved by A-listers and dignitaries from around the world who wouldn’t stay anywhere else. If we had bottomless bank accounts, we wouldn’t either!
