Situated on the waterfront, just off sleepy Calvathy Road, this is a quiet and peaceful hideaway in Fort Kochi. It opened in 1997 with just five rooms, but has since expanded to 16. Even so, the vibe is still personal and cosy. The airy rooms are simple but stylish, with white walls and explosive dashes of colour in the form of bright-yellow ceilings and vibrant bedspreads. They’re set around a lush garden, overgrown with tropical plants, lilac frangipani flowers and with quirky terracotta sculptures dotted around. And at night, it’s illuminated – to magical effect – with lanterns hanging in the trees. At one end, there’s an elegant archway, beyond which lies the palm-thatched restaurant, right beside Vembanad Lake. Some tables are along the pier, so you can dine under the night sky. Breakfast is top-notch: eggs on seeded toast, fresh fruit, coffee and freshly squeezed pineapple juice. Ideally located, the hotel is within walking distance of the 400-year-old Jewish Synagogue, the Mattancherry Palace and the antique and spice markets of Mattancherry (Jew Town) as well as the churches and fishing nets of Fort Kochi. After a day exploring, you can spoil yourself at the hotel’s Ayurvedic spa.
