Hotel Review

The rugged drive leading up to Glenburn seems but a distant memory the moment you step out of the car and are handed a glass of refreshing iced tea. A working tea estate, this boutique hotel sits in acres of plantation and grounds with views across to the Himalayas and Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest peak. Glenburn is home to eight suites, housed in two separate bungalows: the Burra Bungalow and the newer Water Lily Bungalow. The décor is truly inspirational with beautiful fabrics and furniture all lovingly hand-chosen by Delhi-based interiors guru Bronwyn Latif. Each suite has its own look, but all come with baskets of fresh fruit, vases of flowers and Darjeeling green tea toiletries. With each day getting off to a good start with a wake-up call of ‘bed tea’, food and drink (tea in particular) play a prominent role in all stays. Opt for lunch in the hotel or elsewhere; a picnic out whilst walking or down by the river at the hotel’s camp, which also offers BBQs, fishing and an alternative night’s accommodation. Dinner, served around the large dining table, is a convivial affair but, if you fancy something a little more private, a table can be set up in a quieter spot. Spend days soaking up the atmosphere, relaxing, and touring the tea factory. Or, venture further afield on a walk with one of the Glenburn guides who’ll enthusiastically point out flowers and butterflies galore as you saunter along passing plantation workers and singing schoolchildren.
